Many Hunter Douglas window fashions can be motorized. That means a motor in the headrail does the work of raising, lowering or tilting the window covering. The methods of motorization are as varied as the products themselves. Some systems are powered by batteries (such as PowerRise®2.0 and PowerTilt™ systems), others by household current or power supplies (such as PowerGlide® 2.0). Additionally, many Hunter Douglas motorized products can be controlled as part of a lighting or whole-home automation system.
Hard-Wired Motorization
The world of motorized window coverings has come a long way from its first inception. What started out as a loud, clunky way to “magically” lift a roller shade has become an elegant way to control the natural lighting in any room. Systems of all shapes and sizes have come into the market, all built around different philosophies of how a shade should operate. Hunter Douglas believes in the “simply elegant” approach.
Operation should be intuitive and easy to understand, while the styles and fabrics from the global leader in window fashions provide homes with an elegant look. Where form meets function, motorized window coverings are the combination of years of innovation and experience.
Hunter Douglas battery operated lifting systems, PowerRise® 2.0, PowerGlide® 2.0 and PowerTilt™, provide a wonderful introduction to the world of motorized products. Built with Platinum™
Technology, the patented combination of infrared and radio control, these systems are the ultimate in convenience and flexibility. Control products from a Platinum remote, Platinum wireless wall switch or other device. The choice is yours.Hunter Douglas also provides motorized window coverings for advanced applications. The gaining popularity of smart-home automation systems have lead to an increase in the need for high-end window covering products that can work with them. Many premier products from Hunter Douglas such as Silhouette, Duette, Designer Roller Shades, and Vignette roman shades can be integrated into any automation system. These hard-wired systems provide the reliability and advanced features necessary to work seamlessly with these complex systems. Convenience, energy efficiency and child safety are just a few of the many advantages motorized window coverings have to offer. Hunter Douglas has the right product to fit nearly any motorized application.
Hard-Wired Motorization systems can operate larger window coverings, offer greater versatility and guarantee operation more precisely than battery-powered systems. With Hard-Wired Motorization, wires are routed from a window location to a control device and power supply. The power supplies are typically concealed in a closet, attic or basement. If a customer is planning on controlling window coverings via their home automation system, hard-wiring is the best decision for maximum reliability and control options.
Home Automation
Motorized window coverings can be operated with a remote control, a touch panel or even light sensors. In addition, operation can be programmed to raise and lower the window coverings at certain times of the day, on different days of the week. Home automation systems can easily accommodate motor-only window coverings and Hard-Wired systems from Hunter Douglas. Hunter Douglas products are very versatile in adapting to the variety of home automation control sources.
PRE-WIRING
The best time to wire a house for home automation is while the house is being constructed. This minimizes the cost and effort. If you are considering a Hard-wired system to operate your Hunter Douglas blinds for you new home, you will need to start the process long before the wiring stage. Plans need to be designed for the Hard-wired system that will be used. Once the system has been designed, meetings will are held with the electrician to go over wiring diagrams. At Sheila's Window Toppers, the quote you will receive for your hard wired window coverings will include wiring diagrams for your electrician.
If you think that you may want HARD WIRED blinds in the future have the Electrician run 14-3 wire to the top right corner of the windows. If you have any high or hard to reach windows, run these wires during the building stage as you may want to add the blinds at a later date.Introduction to Platinum™ Technology

WHAT IS PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY?
Platinum™ Technology is the name given to the patented wireless communication system from Hunter Douglas used to operate our PowerRise® 2.0, PowerGlide® 2.0 and PowerTilt™ systems. Platinum Technology uses a combination of two different types of wireless signals to control window coverings: radio waves and an infrared signal.
By combining these two signal methods, Hunter Douglas gives consumers the best features and control in the industry. Whether opening a single window covering or partially closing a roomful of coverings at the same time, Platinum Technology provides the ultimate in control.
WHAT IS RADIO FREQUENCY?
Radio frequency (RF) in today’s world simply refers to the use of radio waves of a given frequency to wirelessly send data from a transmitter to a receiver. Platinum Technology uses radio waves in the 2.4GHz (pronounced “giga-hurtz”) frequency range to send commands from the Platinum remote or Platinum wireless wall switch to the receiver at the window covering. Radio waves, due to their nature, pass through solid objects and radiate in every direction. That means a remote sending an RF signal does not need to be pointed at a window covering in order to control it, the remote does not have to be in the same room as the window covering it operates nor does the satellite eye need to be visible. People use products that send radio frequency signals every day. From cell phones and keyless car FOBs, to baby monitors and even garage door openers. Each device sends out RF signals (radio waves) to a receiver on the other end. If the receiver on the other end doesn’t “hear” the signal being sent, nothing happens (or a cell phone call gets dropped).
Operational Distance of Radio Waves
Range of operation may vary due to common household construction, layout and other wireless devices in the home. Much like reception with a cell phone, there may be better locations within a home to use radio frequency than others.
WHAT IS INFRARED?
An infrared (IR) signal uses an invisible beam of energy to send commands from a limited distance (usually less than 30 feet) to an electronic device. Similar to a flashlight, a clear line of sight between the device sending the signal and the device receiving the signal is necessary. Likewise, an infrared beam reflects off solid surfaces, bouncing around a room, which could activate a window covering unintentionally.
Products that use an infrared signal as a means of communication are so common, people seldom think about it. The most common device that uses an infrared signal sent from a remote in today’s world is the television. By pointing the TV remote at the television and pressing a button, the television responds by changing channels, changing the volume level or powering off.
Operational Distance of Infrared Signals
The maximum operational distance an infrared signal can travel is 30 feet or less in a straight line. There cannot be any physical obstructions (like a drapery, top treatment or cornice) between the remote and the receiver eye. Also, an infrared signal can be compromised by direct sunlight or bright interior light. Keep all satellite eyes or infrared receivers out of direct sunlight for better operation.
HOW PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY IS USED WITH HUNTER DOUGLAS PRODUCTS
You need two parts to a control system: the part sending the signal and the part receiving the signal. For Hunter Douglas products, the part sending the signal is the Platinum™ remote or wireless wall switch. The part receiving the signal is the window covering sensor eye. And the best part is that Hunter Douglas gives you two different ways to send a signal to the window covering. One needs a clear line-of-sight from the remote to the shade (infrared). The other just needs the window covering to be within “hearing distance” of the remote (radio frequency).
Two Technologies in One
Both IR signals and RF waves have proven to be reliable communication methods for controlling motorized window coverings for over 20 years. Both have good points and bad points. The shortcomings of both IR-only and RF-only systems have been reduced by the development of Platinum Technology. With this patented system, we offer consumers both methods of sending and receiving signals for a variety of reasons.
|
Some Consumers prefer to use the IR method over radio control.
|
Platinum remotes can operate non-Platinum Technology PowerRise® and PowerGlide® products (in IR mode only).
|
Radio control eliminates the need for line-of-sight operation. As long as the sensor eye can be accessed for RF setup, it can be hidden the rest of the time by a drapery or top treatment.
|
Setting up window coverings into groups is done using an infrared signal from the Platinum remote or wireless wall switch. No longer must power be disconnected from window coverings to avoid their inadvertent programming. |
Platinum™ Technology Power Options
BATTERY WAND
Battery wands are the standard power source for PowerRise® 2.0 with Platinum™
Technology systems whether inside or outside mount. Battery wands are mounted on the rear of the headrail for all PowerRise 2.0 systems. The redesigned battery wand will allow for batteries to be changed without removing the window covering from the window. Battery life is approximately one year depending upon usage. You should replace batteries when the window covering begins to operate slowly.SATELLITE BATTERY PACK
The satellite battery pack is an optional power source for all PowerRise 2.0 systems and is standard for PowerTilt systems. The battery pack connects to the same side of the headrail where the receiver eye or satellite eye is located. The satellite battery pack is the best choice when the window covering is mounted in a high window, restricting access to a battery wand.
DC POWER SUPPLY
The DC power supply is an optional power source for PowerRise 2.0 and PowerTilt systems, and is standard on PowerGlide 2.0 systems. The DC power supply plugs into any standard household outlet.
PowerGlide® 2.0 with Platinum™ Technology
PowerGlide® 2.0 with Platinum™ Technology is the motorized wireless control system from Hunter Douglas offered with Luminette® Privacy Sheers, Luminette Modern Draperies and Skyline™ Gliding Window Panels. With a quiet, modular motor and patented Platinum Technology communication that uses both radio wave signals and infrared signals to operate window coverings, PowerGlide 2.0 takes control to a new level. Wirelessly operate a single Luminette Privacy Sheer, Luminette Modern Drapery or Skyline Gliding Window Panels unit, or groups of products from the Platinum remote or Platinum wireless wall switch.
Drop by Sheila's Window Toppers at Crowfoot to see both a Skyline Gliding Window Panel and a Luminette Privacy Sheer with the PowerGlide® 2.0 with Platinum™ Technology on display.
PowerTilt™ with Platinum™ Technology
PowerTilt™ with Platinum™ Technology is the motorized wireless control system from Hunter Douglas used to tilt the slats of horizontal blinds for the ultimate in light control. Built with patented Platinum Technology communication that uses both radio wave signals and infrared signals to operate window coverings, PowerTilt products take light control to a whole new level. Wirelessly operate a single window covering or groups of window coverings at the same time from the Platinum remote or wireless wall switch.
